Jars have been used consistently as a staple in mycology research. Substrate bags are a new, innovative way of cultivating your research. They have many advantages over jars, which is why we love them!
Bags are pliable, ensuring a good even breaking-up of the substrate to facilitate better colonization. Most compound substrates (I.e., BRF, Hypoo, etc.) cannot be broken up in jars, adding extra time onto your project. The minimum amount of time spent on colonizing with jars would be 6 weeks due to these issues with mixing.
Bags massively speed up this process by mixing the mycelium ball up with the remaining substrate at day seven (after seeing signs of life). This allows the mycelium to colonize 1-4lbs of substrate after another 7-14 days. For BRF mixed bags, spores can be massaged throughout the substrate directly after injection and full colonization can occur in 7-14 days.
These versatile bags can also be used to fruit 1-2lbs cakes made of any substrate with the addition of a 5mm vermiculite casing layer. This is referred to as fruiting directly from the bag. Cakes can be birthed, dunked, rolled in vermiculite and fruited in a fruiting chamber. PF TEK cakes can be broken up and used to transfer to bulk substrate.
This bag has an self-healing injection port to transfer you spores to your project. The spores will then germinate and colonize the substrate within the bag. From this point, you can use them in a similar fashion to the Jars you may be used to.
This side- gusseted breathable bag ensures your project will be sturdy and able to stand-up after filling. Unicorn Mushroom Grow bags are pliable at any temperature as well as after sterilization. The bag opening is designed for easy sealing, and the bottom of the bag can withstand agitation.
