0.22micron Luer-Slip syringe filters pre-sterilized and ready for your use! Ideal when adding ventilation to grain spawn or liquid culture jars.

These are pre-sterilized, 13mm diameter, 0.22µm porosity syringe filters with polypropylene housing with PTFE membrane/filter to withstand the high temperature of being autoclaved. PTFE membrane is also hydrophobic, which is ideal for filtering both gases and organic solvents. They can be used with liquid culture lids to provide filtered air that is 100% contaminant free when extracting from a sealed media jar.

These are compatible with both standard Luer-slip syringes as well as common jar lid modifications allowing you a wide range of uses for the everyday mycologist!

These are comparable to Whatman syringe filters at a fraction of the cost. They are a smaller version of the 25mm filters. Many cultivators prefer a smaller diameter filter for regular jar lids due to the smaller size.

How to Install on Jar Lids

You will need:

• Your Luer-slip syringe filters
• Mason jar metal lids/plastic grow lids
• Drill (5mm/6mm bit) or hole punch
• High-temperature RTV silicone (optional but recommended for sealing)
• Gloves and face mask
• Isopropyl Alcohol 70% Spray
• (Optional but recommended) Laminar Flow Hood or SAB.

Begin by drilling a single 5-6mm hole in the center/off-center of each jar lid. We would recommend de-burring the hole to prevent sharp edges from damaging the filter.

Proceed to wipe the lid thoroughly with 70% isopropyl alcohol spray to remove dust, oils, and metal shavings.

Push the Luer end of the filter through the hole from the outside of the lid. If the fit is loose, secure it using the RTV silicone on both sides. Allow this to cure fully, which typically takes 12-24 hours. If you wish you inoculate via a syringe, you can drill a second hole for a self-healing injection port and secure it in place using the same method.

We would then recommend wiping down the entire lid assembly again with alcohol before use.

Sterilization Support and Contamination Control

Before Use

• Work in a still air box or under a laminar flow hood to reduce airborne contaminants.
• Wear sterile gloves and a face mask.
• Sterilize all tools if not sterile at point of first use.

During Sterilization

• Cover the filter with foil during sterilization to prevent moisture damage or melting from direct contact with steam.
• Allow jars to cool fully inside the pressure cooker to avoid condensation or vacuum pulling in unfiltered air.

Inoculation & Fruiting

• Use fresh, gamma irradiated, NHS grade needles for each inoculation unless inoculating multiple projects in one sitting. Flame sterilization and alcohol does not lead to perfect sterilization and can actually cause contamination in some cases. New needles are cheap and can be bulk bought and will prevent contamination if used, so why not use them?
• Only remove foil from filters once you’re in a clean working environment.
• Avoid excessive handling or breathing over open jars.
