Potato flakes are ideal for making potato dextrose agar for agar plates!
PDA Agar mix sterilizes at temperatures above 121c for 90 minutes per 250ml. It melts at over 80c and sets at under -45c.
To make 1000ml of PDA Agar you will need:
- 2000ml water jug
- 1000ml boiling water (distilled is best)
- 20g potato flakes
- 15g agar powder
- 10g cane sugar/maple syrup/sugar.
- 5-6 drops of agar colorant- we use blue as we believe it shows contamination better.
The method is as simple as mixing all the ingredients within your water jug until its a smooth consistent mix (the smoother the better!). Then bottle up or contain your Agar so you can sterilize it within your pressure cooker. Make sure the lid of your Agar container is not on tight, as it could pop open when in your pressure cooker.
PDA Agar mix can easily be stored for future use.
Be careful when working with boiling water as it can cause burns. We cannot accept any responsibility for your actions.
